Storming of the Winter Palace
It is well known that the culmination point of the Great October Socialist Revolution was the storming of the Winter Palace. Most of our representations about the Storming are based on these frames, which for us looks now like documentary. Not surprisingly, they can be seen in each telecast or documentary film about Russian Revolution.
However, these frames from the film “October” are nothing more than Sergei Eisenstein’s creative fantasy. In fact, after the signal from the cruiser “Aurora” at 09:40pm on October 25 revolutionaries broke into the Palace Square, but here they were met by shots of Women’s Battalion of Death (units formed by the Provisional Government to raise the patriotic spirit in the army and to shame by his own example the male soldiers who refuse to fight). Revolutionaries retreated under the arch of the General Staff, and began the negotiations. The negotiations resulted in women and cadets (cadets of military schools), defending the palace, abandoned their positions. Revolutionary soldiers and sailors freely entered into the Winter Palace through the open doors, the famous gates remained locked. The Provisional Government was arrested only at 2:40am October 26, 1917.
