Why it is so called: Since Peter the Great to the present day in the fortress mint coins and medals. However, banknotes are not producing here.

Interesting fact: You can determine the origin of any Russian coins by the special stamp under the left paw of the eagle on the reverse. If you find there the stamp with the letters СПМД, it means, that this coins was minted in St. Petersburg.
